Successful Trips for Trevose's George Leigh

Friday 27th July 2018

George Leigh (Trevose and pictured above) has had a busy period of golf recently. After being an instrumental part of Cornwall’s win in the SWCGA Boys Championship at Perranporth earlier this month Leigh has travelled further afield in pursuit of honours.

First he played in the England Boys Under 16 Open Amateur Stroke Play Championship for the McGregor Trophy at Kedleston Park GC, Derbyshire. After a first round one over par 73, George excelled in round two with the joint lowest score of the week a 5 under par 67 which saw him move into second place. Rounds three and four were both 2 over 74s which ultimately meant a tied 6th finish on 288, 7 shots behind the winner, fellow England Golf Boys international Conor Gough (Stoke Park).

The McGregor Trophy is one of golf’s most sought-after U16 titles and Gough follows in the footsteps of such previous winners as Justin Rose and Eduardo Molinari.

Next for 16 year old Leigh was a step up to the English Boys' Under 18 Open Amateur Stroke Play for the Carris Trophy at Fulford GC. Leigh comfortably made the cut in the event with rounds of 74 (+2) and 73. Round 3 produced another 73 with George tied 33rd some 13 shots behind leader Gregorio De Leo (Italy).

George reserved his best of the week for a day four round of 69 (-3) which saw him move up from 1 33rd spot to a tied 20th finish on an overall total of 289 , just one shot over par for those four rounds. Another good week for our young man from Trevose!

The overall winner was England’s Barclay Brown (The Hallamshire) who overcame Italy’s De Leo  by one shot with birdies at 17 and 18 to finish on an 8 under total of 280.

Leigh’s travels do not end here though as he sits amongst the 252 entrants into the R&A’s Boys Amateur Championship taking place at both Royal Portrush Golf Club and Portstewart Golf Clubs, Northern Ireland from 14th - 19th August 2018. Shortly after that Leigh will rejoin his Cornwall team and head to the Boys County Finals at Rockcliffe Hall, Durham from 28th - 30th August.
