An overall field of 288 players competed yesterday at four venues throughout the UK for a place in this year's 147th Open Championship at Carnoustie, Scotland. And for former Cornwall County Player Rhys Enoch (Truro)it proved to be a great day as he secured one of the spots available for next week's Open. Enoch claimed the third of the three spots available at Hollinwell GC, Notts with rounds of 72 and 70 to finish on 2 under par, one shot behind England's Oliver Wilson and 4 shots behind leading qualifier Ashton Turner. For Enoch his first round contained four birdies on the bounce in what ended as a level par round but a further four birdies and an eagle in round 2 contributed to a second round of 2 under par.

30 year old Enoch , a fully fledged Challenge Tour Professional, won this year’s Cape Town Open on the Sunshine Tour and now has the opportunity to play in the world's leading tournament for the second time, having qualified previously in 2014 when he played at Royal Liverpool.

He said: "I played The Open at Hoylake in 2014 and missed the cut by three shots but it was probably the best week of my life so I can't wait to get back and try again.

"It's an unbelievable event and it can't come soon enough. I haven't played Carnoustie, but I'm know it's one of the toughest around."

Whilst there was joy for Enoch, there was disappointment for West Cornwall's Harry Hall who was also taking part in Final Qualifying at Princes. Hall shot rounds of 74 and 76 to finish tied 23rd. One of the qualifiers at Princes was two time US Open winner Retief Goosen.
