Rundle & Toms Blitz as Newquay Win Over 55s Championship

Newquay GC’s O55s stole the limelight yesterday as they stormed to victory in the CGU Over 55s Team Championship staged on a very well presented Lanhydrock. In very warm conditions and with a field of 162 golfers from 27 of the county’s clubs participating the Newquay team of 6 (pictured above), playing as 3 pairs in a betterball medal off handicap, registered a total of 127 (best two pairs from 3) to claim a 2 shot win over Tehidy Park (129) and 3rd placed West Cornwall (134). Two other clubs, Looe and St Enodoc were 4th and 5th respectively on the same 134 total.

Foe Newquay their first two pairs, Captain Dave Ball with John Mitchell and Chairman Ian Henwood with David Chapman, both returned 67s and at that stage it looked like the club might be amongst the pack on the 134 total but cue third pair Dick Rundle and Adrian Toms who had a stellar day romping to a nett 60 with a blitzing two nett eagles , 6 nett birdies and 10 nett pars. The nett 60 was the lowest nett of the day followed by 64s from the Tehidy Park pairing of CGU Vice President Andrew Clotworthy with Nigel James (2nd best) and Trethorne’s  Gary Marquand with Andrew Dance (3rd best). Mike Eddy and Michael Williams (Tehidy Park) registered a nett 65 as did Peter Bradbury and Paul Crowther (Porthpean).

There were only 4 winners in the 2s competition, Kelvin Nancarrow (Carlyon Bay) who holed his second shot at the par 4 first hole, Colin Roberts (Trethorne), Pete Verran (West Cornwall) and Neal Jolly (St Enodoc).

Lanhydrock GC Captain Robert Capewell welcomed those present to the club and thanked all the staff responsible for making the event run so smoothly. CGU President Mike Elis thanked Graham and Claire Bond for their generosity in making the course available to the CGU , a gesture which was much appreciated. Ellis also made special mention of Head Greenkeeper Simon Ashworth and his team for the excellent presentation of the course which had been remarked on by so many of those taking part.

The annual CGU Seniors Championship takes place at Trethorne GC on Thursday 16th August 2018 with age category prizes across several bands. (55-59, 60-64, 65-69, 70-74 and 75 and above) Entry costs £15.
