Tehidy Target Title of Champion Club

Wednesday 20th September 2017

England Golf English Champion Club Sat/Sun 23/24th September 2017 East Devon GC

This coming weekend a team from Tehidy Park GC will descend on East Devon GC at Budleigh Salterton in an effort to claim the title of English Champion Club. As CGU Cornwall Team Championship winners in March this year, Tehidy Park earned the right to represent the Duchy in the two day event which features clubs from 34 different counties. The three-man teams play 36 holes of scratch strokeplay over the two days with the winning club being the one with the lowest combined score of all three players over those two rounds. The winning club will go on to represent England in the European Men's Club Trophy.

Tehidy Park are taking a squad of four players to the event and will make a decision on the three who play at a late stage. The four are Club Vice Captain Peter Simmons, who is joined by one of the club's greenkeepers Matt Lock, current Cornwall Mens Team member Rob MacGregor and Club Secretary and County Vice Captain Ian Veale. The Tehidy team will tee off from 1000 onwards on day one and from 1330 on day two. Supporters and spectators will be very welcome.

Founded in 1902, East Devon GC has around 800 members in total across all sections, and of these about 100 are single-figure players, which speaks volumes about the standard of player the course attracts. Whilst not a long course it does, however, offer a fair and interesting test of golf, requiring accurate shots in order to score well. Situated on the cliff top above Budleigh Salterton, and offering spectacular views, at 6344 yards the well drained fairways, close cropped links turf and challenging greens offer a fair and interesting test of golf.

There is plenty of SW interest in the competition with club teams from neighbouring Devon (Tiverton), Somerset (Burnham & Berrow), Gloucestershire (Cotswold Hills), Wiltshire (Broome Manor), and Dorset (Parkstone).

The competition was first staged in 1984 and the only Cornish club to win in the period since were St Mellion (2001) who went on to represent the country in Italy that year. So come on Tehidy Park - go do it, we all wish you the very best!
