CGU Depot & Petherick Cups Sunday 17th September 2017 Launceston GC
Matt Richards (West Cornwall) claimed the major spoils yesterday as Launceston GC hosted the CGU Depot & Petherick Cup competitions staged for club scratch and handicap champions respectively. On a dry windless day with sunshine dominating proceedings the field of 34 players were treated to a golf course in excellent condition bearing in mind the deluges of late. Richards is pictured above with Launceston GC Captain Phil Bott.
Playing in the first group out with county team mates Richard Jasper (Launceston) and Tom Fox (China Fleet), Richards produced a level par front 9 of 36 but then made 3 birdies on the back half for his 3 under par total of 67. The birdies came at the 13th, 14th and final hole which saw all three players hit excellent second shots into the heart of the par 5 green. Fox too made birdie whilst Jasper sunk a mid range putt for an eagle 3. It was Jasper who claimed the runners up spot with his round of 68 whilst Fox took 3rd place with a 72.
Richards, as winner of the Depot Cup, said “Obviously I am very pleased to win but to be honest the round was nothing really special. I just played steady golf and did not make any mistakes. It was good to be playing with Jasp and Foxy and we pulled each other along.”
4th place in the Depot Cup went to Aaron Stephens (Newquay) who had been looking for his 3rd win in the competition having claimed the title in 2015 and 2016. On this occasion he had to settle for a 72, one shot ahead of fifth placed David Sleat (St Mellion) on 73.
In the chase for the handicap winners it was Truro’s Marc Wilson - pictured above - who came out on top as he returned a fine 4 over par gross 74 (nett 68) to claim the Petherick Cup on his first visit to the course. Having dropped four shots in the first 5 holes he played, Wilson recovered to be level par through the remainder, helped by birdies at 12 and 14.
Second place went to Ashley Jackson (Budock Vean) with a gross 77 (nett 69) as he too shot a level par back 9 to compensate for the 7 dropped shots on his outward half. Third was Treloy’s Carl Langslow with a gross 82 (nett 73).
Launceston GC Captain Phil Bott welcomed all the competitors to the club and presented the prizes. He congratulated all those present on their achievement in reaching the event as they had all been winners already. There was universal agreement the course had been in a very good condition allowing for the recent rainfall.
