CGU Seniors Team Championship Monday 26th June 2017 St Austell GC
The Trevose G&CC Seniors - pictured above - took the major spoils at St Austell yesterday as the Cornwall Golf Union staged it's Seniors Team Championship. After the competitions successful introduction last year the event again saw an excellent field of 144 players taking part representing 24 of the county's clubs.
It was the Trevose team though who produced the best of the day. The competition rules dictate three pairs from competing clubs play a betterball medal with the best two pairs forming an aggregate total. In the event of a tie the third pairs score would come into the reckoning.
The competition commenced at 8.00am on a great golfing day with the St Austell course presented in excellent condition and this was combined with little or no wind for the early starters. Playing first were inaugural winners St Austell and they set the early benchmark with three scores in the 60s as did their playing partners Carlyon Bay. It was soon clear though their respective totals of 134 would no be enough as was later proved when both clubs finished in joint 12th place.
Next to set the pace were the teams from Looe and Porthpean who both returned totals of 131 with Syd Pascoe and Colin Hewling and Lloyd Addison and Lionel Johns returning 65s respectively for their teams. The 131 total was later matched by teams from Newquay, St Mellion and Merlin.
In the next pairings to start came Lanhydrock and Truro who both eclipsed the 131 mark. Truro's best score came from Chris Pashley and Les Prigg with a 64 as their team totalled 130. This was however beaten by a Lanhydrock total of 127 as former club captain Stewart Bradley and partner Nigel O'Brien combined with their team's best score, a nett 63. For a long time this looked like 127 would be the score to beat.
Afternoon starters Trevose then came to the fore with scores of 62, 63 and 65 from their three pairs. The excellent 62 was scored by county seniors team member Trevor Ashton and Ross Oliver, the 63 by Bill Cairley and David Cowan and the non-counting third score of 65 from CGU Vice President Mike Ellis with David White as the team combined for a 125 total, which ultimately proved good enough.
The Trevose score was still open to attack and playing behind them Bowood Park came closest as their team total was 127 to tie Lanhydrock. For Bowood the best score was an outstanding nett 59 from another county senior David Goodman playing with Chris Woolley - pictured below with CGU President Glyn Rowett.
Goodman and Woolley's 59 proved to be the best individual pairs score on the day, beating the 61 from St Mellion's Pete Mehigan and the 62 of Ashton and Oliver.
Lanhydrock finished as runners up in the team event pipping Bowood Park on the basis of the third card score. Truro finished in 4th spot on 130 with five other clubs on 131.
CGU Secretary Chris Pountney thanked St Austell for staging the event and referred to the welcome and hospitality extended to the Union. He singled out those who had undertaken the 6.5 hrs worth of starting as well as long standing host club PGA Professional Tony Pitts for the help provided both before and on the day of the event. Glyn Rowett then presented the prizes and he too thanked those at his home club for the work they had put in to make the event such a success.
For Trevose David Cowan responded saying how pleased his team were at winning and how good it was to see most of the county's clubs represented in what is an excellent competition. He too thanked the hsot club for the part they had played.
