Yesterday at Trevose G &CC in what (some may view !!) was a very fitting and appropriate win, CGU President Glyn Rowett and his Vice President Mike Ellis claimed the Foster Mitchell Cups awarded to the winners of the President's Invitation Day competition.
Having invited themselves along to play together with representatives from 19 of the county's 33 affiliated clubs, Rowett and Ellis combined well to take the pole position on 42 points, just pipping Bowood Park's Josh Greenaway and Allan Stockwell on countback. As a pair the winners dropped just two shots across their round cancelling these out with two gross birdies.
On what was, perhaps thankfully, a slightly cooler day than the preceding few a field of 44 took part in a pairs betterball stableford competition.
Third spot went to host club Captain Bob Wyatt and partner Nick Prior on 41 points. A special prize was awarded to The Point at Polzeath pairing of Jeremy and Cato Davies who returned a non qualifying score of 46 points.
Trevose Captain Bob Wyatt welcomed those present to the club expressing how much he had enjoyed the day especially as he and his partner had had a 'good old battle' with messrs Rowett and Ellis.
Post golf Glyn Rowett addressed the competitors who had dined together and started by expressing his thanks to Trevose GC for their hospitality and generosity in staging the event. He thanked the club also for the excellent meal which everyone had just enjoyed.
He then discussed with the audience a number if issues of current interest. These included asking those present their views on the possibility of a future umbrella body, set up as Cornwall Golf, made up of representatives from the CGU, the Cornwall Ladies County Golf Association, the current Cornwall Golf Development Group and clubs, which would deal with all matters golf in Cornwall with areas of common interest and benefit. Those present indicated approval of the principle. The CGU would now in partnership with the other groups seek to develop outline proposals which would be put to the membership at a later stage.
Also discussed were County Week with some valid points made on entry fees, field sizes, team events, course congestion and interruptions by those present. These would be considered by the Competition Sub Committee shortly.
Finally the CGU President referred to the subject of Affiliation Fees and collection of monies owed. He advised that England Golf may well conduct future audits within county of membership numbers and also that timely returns should be made by clubs even if the full renewals position was not yet known. A second collection to be made 8 months after renewals date would deal with new and later joiners to clubs.
