Cornwall v Devon SWCGA Week Day 1 Sun 11th June 2017 Weston-super-Mare GC

Cornwall staged a grand afternoon comeback in the foursomes on day 1 of the South Western Counties Golf Association Championship week at Weston-super-Mare GC yesterday to beat Devon in the first of 5 round robin matches against the region's other counties.

Trailing 5-3 after the morning singles the team claimed three of the afternoon foursomes  to pip Devon 7.5 - 6.5.

In the singles there were just the three wins from eight possible for Cornwall and these came from Matt Richards, Richard Jasper and Rob MacGregor. A Strong afternoon performance from Joe Cruse partnering Richards saw them beat Devon's Chris McGill and George Bryant 4&3. Jasper and Josh Greenaway went down by the same margin to Harrison Greenberry and Peter Lawrence before Jared Mortimore and Aaron Stephens who had sat out the morning singles beat the Thompson brothers, Robbie and James, 3&2.

With the foursomes matches each counting for 1.5 points the last game was vital and Cornish County Champion Conor Wilson and partner MacGregor claimed a 2 hole win over Adam Bridgewater and Dan Rosevear to see the Duchy team open with a fine overall win.

Today Cornwall are on the course against Dorset who yesterday found themselves in the same position as Cornwall had been - down 5-3 at lunch versus Wiltshire. Dorset then repeated the Cornish achievement to record a win over Wiltshire. The other winners on day one were host county Somerset who beat Gloucestershire 9 -5 after being 6-2 up at lunch.
