Cornwall U18s got their Greenaway League campaign off to an excellent winning start with victory away to Devon U18s at the fabulous Woodbury Park Golf Club last Thursday.

Improving the quality of foursomes play is a target for the county overall and the U18s demonstrated  its value in the morning as new county captain, Ethan Tempest and his fellow West Cornwall clubmate, Jack Kevern, got Cornwall off to a strong start with a 2up victory. This was quickly followed by a 1up victory from the Bude & North Cornwall pairing of Connor Vanstone and Charlie Ward. With Jonty Jenkin (West Cornwall) and William Hardwick (Perranporth) winning comfortably by a 4 & 3 margin, and the Falmouth pairing of Isaac D'Bue and Archie Fox winning 2 & 1, this put Cornwall in the driving seat. The only victory for Devon came over the pairing of Hugo Watson (Carlyon Bay) and William Sercombe (Falmouth). At lunch Cornwall held a deserved 4 - 1 lead.

With Devon looking for a comeback in the afternoon singles, they started strongly with Devon's Stanley White defeating Jack Kevern 4 & 3. Ethan Tempest and Charlie Ward quickly steadied the ship with halved matches against Joe Charchafchi and Isaac Bond respectively. However, Devon then claimed the next two matches with defeats for Isaac D'Bue and Connor Vanstone. However, Jonty Jenkin's 4 & 3 win, plus Hugo Watson's 3 & 2 victory gave Cornwall the four points required for victory despite late defeats for William Hardwick and Archie Fox.

Thanks to Devon for a great, close match as always and to Woodbury Park GC for being fantastic hosts. Cornwall's next match is an away trip to league newcomers Dorset (Broadstone GC) at the end of July followed by a home match to Somerset (at fortress Perranporth), in early August.
