SW Four Counties Tournament Day 1 Wednesday 13th April 2022 Exeter G&CC

Once again Cornwall came up short in the Strokeplay competition which gets the 2 day South West Four Counties Junior Tournament formally underway.

Held for the first time in 3 years owing to the pandemic the four Counties of Cornwall, Devon, Dorset and Somerset converged on Exeter G&CC yesterday for practice before all spent a first night in local accommodation.

This morning all four counties had teams of 8 on the course with the best 6 Strokeplay scores to count. And Somerset were clear winners four shots ahead of host county Devon. Cornwall finished on a total of 458. Winning individual score was returned by Dorset's Jenson Bull with a 70, with Tempest just two shots further back.

Team Totals:

Somerset 436

Devon 440

Dorset 447

Cornwall 458

For the Duchy Juniors Captain Ethan Tempest (West Cornwall) led the way with a 72. Other counting scores came from Will Hardwick (Perranporth, 76) Thomas Miller (Newquay, 76), Jack Kevern (West Cornwall, 77) Jonty Jenkin (West Cornwall, 79) Harry Drewett (Falmouth, 78), whilst the scores of Archie Fox (Falmouth, 80) and Connor Vanstone(BUde, 84) were discounted.

The afternoon saw the start of the round robin matchplay between the counties and this concludes with two matches tomorrow. Today Cornwall faced Devon and after a close overall match the spoils were shared 7-7. (6 singles and one foursome - Two points for a win and one point for a half). Cornish wins were achieved by Kevern and Hardwick as the latter made a world class up and down from 150 yds at the last hole to remain 1 up. The halved match involved Jenkin who earlier in the day had finished birdie eagle birdie in the strokeplay. In the foursome there was a win for Fox and Drewett.

Tomorrow Cornwall face Somerset in the morning before facing Dorset in the afternoon. Our team will be looking to remain unbeaten and at least have a share of the Matchplay Shield. In todays other match Somerset beat Dorset 8-6.
