A two-day trip to the beautifully presented Lyme Regis GC resulted in Cornwall U16s putting in a great display to claim a 4 - 4 draw against a formidable Dorset side.

With the team sheets finalised, the Cornwall boys knew they had to perform at their very best based on the difference in some handicaps. However, out on the course it was an entirely different story and in truth, we were never in danger of losing the match as the top five players all started strongly to hold good leads over their opponents going into the final few holes.

In the top match, Dorset's No.1 player used a favourable bounce out from the trees on the 18th to claim an unlikely half against Jack Kevern (West Cornwall.) Cornwall captain, Isaac D'Bue (Falmouth), was always in command of his match before eventually winning 3&1. Archie Fox (Falmouth) took his opponent to the 18th before losing out to a closing birdie. This was soon followed by a chip-in birdie from Dorset to claim another unlikely half against Cornwall's Harry Drewett (Falmouth.)

Hugo Watson (Carlyon Bay) claimed a convincing 4&3 win against his opponent, before Harry Richards (Carlyon Bay) produced the comeback of the day from being 5 down at one stage to claim a 2&1 win. Thomas Miller (Newquay) also took his match to the 18th, but succumbed 2 down. While debutant, James Tucknott (West Cornwall), found himself up against an inspired opponent on the greens who won 6&5.

Overall, a 4 - 4 draw, which given the fact that this Dorset team had two previous convincing wins against Cornwall, was a pleasing result and shows good progress is being made.

It was also a pleasure to see all matches played in a fantastic friendly spirit.

Lyme Regis was a fantastic venue and the course was presented in marvellous condition for both teams to enjoy. Not only that but the staff went out of their way to welcome the teams and to provide refreshments outside of their normal working hours. CGU Juniors President Matt Tucknott said "There were some great matches on a fabulous course and Lyme Regis is probably the most welcoming club I have ever visited." Well done Lyme Regis Golf Club!
