Johns and Haynes are Lord Lieutenants Winners

St Austell GC's Gary Johns and Adam Haynes captured the Lord Lieutenants Trophy at Carlyon Bay yesterday with a stellar 46 points in the pairs betterball competition.
On a benign day at a beautifully presented Carlyon Bay course with slick greens and some tricky pin positions, Johns playing off 5 made five birdies including an all important 2 at the last hole and with his 17 handicap partner Haynes recording 5 pars with shots, the pairs impressive total set an early target that no one could match.
Runners up were the St Mellion pairing of Adam Welton and Peter Lightfoot who returned an equally impressive 45 point total but suffered the agony of a 3 putt 4 at the last. Welton made three birdies in the space of 4 holes on the back 9 each of them worth 4 points. Third place went to the Falmouth pair of Joh Sanz and Phillip Vann who headed two other pairings also on 44 points by virtue of countback.
This annual charity competition supports St John Ambulance (Cornwall) and once again raised in excess of £1000.
