D'Bue Scorches at Carlyon Bay
Monday 14th June 2021
CGU/CLCGA Junior Championships Sunday 13th June 2021 Carlyon Bay GC
Falmouth Junior Isaac D’Bue was a surprise but deserving winner of the CGU Boys County Championship which took place in glorious weather at a very well presented Carlyon Bay GC yesterday. It really was a scorcher and Isaac’s clubs were certainly hot on a course playing firm and fast.
On a day when 60 juniors were started by host club President Keith Gay as they took part in U12/U14/U16/U18 and Girls groups D’Bue’s performance was the standout feature.
D’Bue playing off a 7 handicap returned two exceptional rounds of 71 for a -2 total of 142 and a win in both the U16 and U18 age groups at gross level. Five birdies in Round 1 were key and compensated for two bogeys and one double at the par 3 17th. He then managed 3 birdies in Round 2 dropping shots at the first and again at the 17th.
Isaac’s win is reward for a lot of hard work put into his game of late and will no doubt have been noted by the watching Mens County Captain Charlie Phillips who may well have expected to see a different junior lift the trophy. D’Bue can expect to be making a trip to the SWCGA Boys Championship at Salisbury next month as well as Woodhall Spa GC in September for the England Golf Boys Champion of Champions event.
Second best total of the day went to Josh Chapman (Tehidy Park) with rounds of 73 and 72 for a +1 total of 145, whilst Thomas Stephens (Trevose) – clearly fatigued after a long week playing for the Mens County Team at Burnham & Berrow – finished 3rd on 147 (75 + 72), just ahead of the improving Ethan Tempest (West Cornwall) who scored 149 (74 + 75).
D’Bue cleaned up in the nett competition (63 + 63) for a 126 total, two shots ahead of James Tucknott (Radnor) with a nett 66 and nett 62.
Tucknott’s consolation was to win the U16 Nett competition 3rd spot some way back was Harry Richards (Carlyon Bay) with a nett total of 139 (67 + 72)

The CLCGA Girls Champion for 2021 is St Enodoc’s Kira Barnes after she returned a gross 77 for a 7 shot winning margin over Lizzy Nile (Carlyon Bay) on 84. In her last year as a junior Barnes retained the trophy she won when the competition was last played in 2019. Kira made a birdie (almost acing the par 3 5th )and one dropped shot in an outward level par 9 holes to set up a good score. A couple of doubles on the back 9 threatened to derail her but a birdie par finish ensured she remained ahead.

Thanks have to go to the Carlyon Bay Hotel and Golf Club staff who looked after us so well. The course as previously stated was in excellent condition with ongoing investment clearly evident and it provided a true and fair test of golf. We were also pleased to see Jill Simmons and Andrew Clotworthy the respective CLCGA and CGU Presidents in attendance and keeping a keen eye on proceedings.
