Miller and Welch Shine for Juniors

SWCGA U14 & U16 Championship Friday 4th June 2021 Mendip Spring GC

Arriving at Mendip Spring GC early Thursday afternoon for a practice round under the guidance of Whitsand Bay Professional Andy Welch, the nine selected boys showed positive signs of what might come the following day. However, despite some good early signs with Jack Kevern (West Cornwall) +1 through his opening 9 holes and Newquay’s Thomas Miller (U14) and Jack Welch (Whitsand Bay) playing to their handicaps, Mendip Spring’s tricky back nine proved the downfall for many of the team. Too many missed fairways which found Mendip’s thick punishing rough and many water hazards, resulted in too many bogeys or worse.

On a positive note, Newquay’s rising star, Thomas Miller, finished in 2nd place in the U16 Nett element. While another young talent, Jack Welch from Whitsand Bay, finished 3rd in the U14 Nett element.

Overall, a disappointing team result. However, on the bright side, we did beat local rivals Devon! Looking ahead, five of the team are still eligible for next year’s championship at Cumberwell Park (Wilts), and with another year of development under their belts, hopefully they will perform to their potential.
