The Burnham and Berrow Challenge Salver - 36 Hole Sunday 2nd May 2021, Burnham Blacks Tees, Championship

Richard Jasper (Launceston) was Cornwall's star performer in the 36 hole Burnham & Berrow GC Challenge Salver held on Sunday 2nd May 2021 as he finished joint runner up in  the prestigious event.

With Burnham & Berrow hosting the South Western Counties Golf Association Championship Week next month, CGU County Captain Charles Phillips was able to cast his beady eye over 12 of his County Squad as they participated in the 63 man field.

It was no real surprise county stalwart Jasper (Launceston) finished in 2nd place as he has consistently performed well at county level and his spot in the 10 man squad who will head back to Burnham is assured. Playing off +3 Jasper made four birdies on an outward nine of 33 (-3) in Round 1 before the same number of bogies saw him complete in a level par 70. On a dry day where the winds freshened considerably a second round 72 meant an overall total of 142 (+2), a score matched by another stalwart in Somerset's Phil White. Despite this pairs good scoring they were a full 9 shots behind winner and England International Arron Edwards-Hill (Chelmsford) who returned a -7 total of 133 after rounds of 65 and 68.

Next best and another stalwart plus for the Duchy was Rob MacGregor (Tehidy Park)with rounds of 75 and 70 and a joint 8th finish.

Another highlight for Cornwall was a hole in one for Adam Bridgewater (Launceston, above) in his second round 70. His ace came at the 182 yard par 3 9th and helped him recover well from a first round 79. In fact his second round was only bettered by Edwards-Hill and one other. Bridgewater was joint third best Cornish performer coming in tied 22nd on 149 with Joe Reynard (Trevose) and Alex McHugh (Mullion) on the same two round total.

Footnote: Cornwall County Vice Captain Peter Simmons, recently appointed as General Manager at Truro GC, did sterling social media work across the day keeping the county faithful informed.
