Depot & Petherick Cups Sunday 20th September 2020 Bude & North Cornwall GC
Ryan Curtis (Bude & N Cornwall) was the major winner yesterday as he claimed the CGU Depot Cup title whilst Neil Ridley (China Fleet) took the honours in the Petherick Cup.
The Depot Cup is contested by Club Scratch Champions whilst the Petherick Cup is for Club Handicap Champions and this years winners - in a combined field of 36 competitors - took to the Bude & North Cornwall links in sunny conditions with enough of a breeze to challenge those playing.
Competing over his home links, Curtis took full advantage of his local knowledge as he birdied the first and third holes and eagled the 9th to go out in a -3 under total of 35, with the only blemish a bogey at the par 3 eighth. Curtis dropped a further shot at the 11th but further birdies at the 12th and 18th holes resulted in an excellent 4 under par round of 67.
Ryan's score was a full 5 shots better than second placed Josh Greenaway (St Enodoc) with a one over par 72 which contained 3 birdies. Third place went to Zach Burrough (Merlin) on 75.
In the Petherick Cup it was Neil Ridley who took the honours with a gross 79 off his 10 handicap leading to a nett 69, claiming the win by two shots from another Bude player in Keith Merrifield on 71 (79-8). Ridley birdied the first and dropped just two shots over the front nine. Overall, 10 pars in his round significantly helped the cause and even back to back double bogies on the back 9 were not enough to derail his final score. Third spot went to Lee Bateman (St Enodoc) with a nett 73.
The CSS for the competition was 71.
Curtis was delighted with his win. "The course played tough today, with a lot of run on firm ground, so it was important to put the ball in the right place. I had help there as I knew where to try and hit the ball. Some of the pins were brutal so knowing where I could take advantage and where not was important. I have been playing well lately and to win today is great."
Whilst formal presentations are not possible in the current climate both trophy winners were able to receive their prizes from a socially distanced CGU President Andrew Clotworthy, who had earlier acted as starter for the field. Clotworthy was pleased with the success of the competition "It’s great to have played a considerable amount of competitive golf despite a background of Covid-19 and all the concerns that have so changed our way of life this year. At the beginning of the crisis, I hoped that, unlike many counties, the CGU should safely play as much of its usual programme as possible. Considerable effort has been made by a number of people, to make this happen. And today we have staged our last conventional competition – the Depot & Petherick Cups. I would like to express a huge thanks to Bude & North Cornwall Golf Club for making their course and facilities available to us today. It is very much appreciated."
