Fox Still in the Hunt

Tom Fox remained very much in contention for the Cornwall Amateur Championship title as he progressed through two rounds of matchplay at St Austell GC.

First Fox despatched Alex McHugh (Mullion) 2&1 and in the afternoon saw off former County Champion Ian Veale (Tehidy Park) by a 6&5 margin.Today (Saturday) he faces Joe Reynard in the first of the quarter final matches. Reynard had a good day. After beating George Linaker (Carlyon Bay) 2&1 in the morning he delivered a thumping 8&7 win over Paul Suddes (Truro)

Next up in todays Quarter Finals Adam Bridgewater (Launceston) faces another Tehidy Park player in Justin Barnard. Bridgewater had a 4&3 win over Simon Knowles (Perranporth) before coming up against fellow club member Richard Jasper. These two had a tussle all the way round and it was not until the 3rd extra hole that Bridgewater prevailed. Barnard eased beat Handicap Challenge Cup winner Luke Hart (Newquay) by 4&3 in the morning and then Simon Hobbs (Bowood Park) with an increased 5&4 margin.

Todays third quarter final sees Matt Richards (West Cornwall) take on George Champion (Truro). Richards had to work hard in winning his morning match against Max Gay (Carlyon Bay) by just the one hole. In his afternoon match he took care of Josh Chapman (Tehidy Park) by 4&2. Chapman had earlier beaten Josh Greenaway (St Enodoc) after having to go to an extra hole.Champion also won his morning match on the 19th beating Alec Nile (Carlyon Bay) before coming out on top of Tom Stephens by 4&2.

The last of the quarter finals is between Al McCulloch (Knebworth) and Jared Mortimore (Truro). Cornishman McCulloch was another one to win at the 19th in the morning against Jack Kevern (West Cornwall) before he defeated Craig Thomas (Trevose) by two holes. Thomas had earlier beaten former County Champion Conor Wilson (Perranporth) 3&2. Mortimore was a handsome morning winner against Cameron Kenworthy (China Fleet) by 5&4 before he beat Ryan Curtis (Bude & N Cornwall) 3&2 in the afternoon.
