Truro Romp to Over 55s Team Win

Tuesday 18th August 2020

Truro GC's team romped to a splendid victory in yesterday's CGU Over 55s Team Championship winning the competition by 8 shots on a total of 178. The team are pictured above together with Club Captain Paul Griffiths (L to R: Mark Stevenson, David Ealing, Paul Griffiths, Andy Beazley, David Kneebone, Graham Cowls and Steve Paice)

A total of 156 players took part as 26 club teams were entered with the format being pairs betterball strokeplay off handicap with a 90% allowance. This year in a change to previous competitions all 3 team scores were to count for an aggregate total.

Whilst the competition was staged over their home course - prepared in excellent condition (well done to Dom and his team!)  - the Truro scores were nevertheless remarkable and the win well deserved. The top two individual pairs on the day were from Truro and laid the foundation of the overall victory.

Top of the pile and out first on the day were Andy Beazley and David Kneebone who returned an exceptional nett 56 made up of 11 gross pars, 4 gross birdies and a gross eagle. The eagle came at the par 5 7th hole for Kneebone as he found the green in two and then holed his putt. Beazley gross birdied the par 4 14th adding a nett eagle to the pairing's score. Next in for Truro was another very good score from Mark Stevenson and Graham Cowls with an excellent nett 58, which on another day could have gained them a pairs win. As it was they gained runners up spot in the pairs competition. With the Triuro third pairing of David Ealing and Steve Paice carding a nett 64 the target was set right from the time those three cards were entered.

Did anyone else come close to Truro? Arguably no one although runners up Carlyon Bay gave it a go with a trio of nett 62s from Mike Allen & Les McGirl, Jeff Davies & Duncan Powell and Mike Rees & Tom Crocker. That gave them a total of 186.

Third team spot was shared by Trevose and China Fleet. For the former Mike Ellis & Peter Marshall registered a nett 61, with David Cowan & Paul Clahane a nett 64 and John Deakin & Ian Colwill a nett 67 for a team total of 192. The China Fleet total was made up by Melvyn Carter & Robin Smith (62), Douglas Fletcher & Harry Walker (64) and Joe Francis & Jim Johnston (66).

Joint 5th went to West Cornwall and Whitsand Bay, whilst 2019 Champions St Mellion finished in 7th spot.

Third place in the pairs went to Stewart Bradley & Stuart Harris (Lanhydrock) on countback with a nett 61, a score matched by Mike Jacka & Ray Crebo (Praa Sands), Tony Ramsden & Richard Hill (Budock Vean), John Boundy and Steve Hobbs (Bude & N Cornwall) and Ellis and Marshall.
