President's Trophy Final 2020

President's Trophy 2020 Winners - Mullion

Last year’s Cornwall Team Championship winners Mullion yesterday picked up the President’s Trophy instead after beating West Cornwall in the final staged at Perranporth.

Captained by Nic Avery the Mullion team were worthy winners as they got the better of their defending champion opponents by a 6.5 – 2.5 margin.

In the 9-man singles matchplay competition which sees three players from each of Categories 1, 2 and 3 participate, West Cornwall took the lead as Ray Carmichael sealed a 4&3 win over Glynn Coates. This though was cancelled out at much the same time when Mullion’s Sam Rule won 8&6 against Graham Webster. Rule’s win was one of the five Mullion needed for an outright win and a further four followed from the middle order of the teams. Chris Howells beat Steve Pollard by 2 holes and Alan McColl won 5&4 against Andre Otto. Avery himself won 3&2 over Mark Eccles and when Micky Doust scored a 2&1 victory over Ian Hodge the win for England’s most southerly course was complete.

At the back end of the field in the category one matches there was a good half for Dave Howe as he came from 5 down to match Richard Bunch. The final two matches went one each to both sides as Andy Postans succumbed to Rhys Kerton 2&1 before Rod Handyside beat Jason Peters by the same margin.

Mullion Players Caddies and Officials all look pretty happy!

CGU President Mike Ellis congratulated both teams and thanked Perranporth GC, its members and staff for their hospitality and service, making the day a special one for all concerned.

West Cornwall team Captain Andy Postans was very gracious as he heartily congratulated Mullion on what he said was a very well-deserved win in a match which had been played in great spirit throughout.

After Mullion Club Captain Dale Wilson expressed his pleasure at the win coming at the end of his period of office, Nic Avery was delighted to accept the President’s Trophy from Mike Ellis. The actual trophy itself was commissioned by Mullion GC stalwart and former CGU President Gerry Fitter (together with Malcolm Jones) and Mullion President Ben Willey spoke of how pleased he was that Gerry was present to see it being presented to his own club.
