Wilson & Stephens Get Full County Call Up

Friday 4th October 2019

CL Wiltshire v Cornwall Channel League Salisbury & S Wilts GC

Cornwall County Men's team will play their final Channel League match of the season away to Wiltshire this coming Sunday 6th October. The match will take place at Salisbury & South Wilts Golf Club from early on Sunday morning and two juniors will make their full county debuts in the encounter. The Trevose pairing of 16 year old juniors Liam Wilson and Thomas Stephens have caught the eye of County Captain Ian Veale for some time now and with a keen eye on the future he has given the two their chance.

Liam Wilson
Thomas Stephens

Wilson, the younger brother of former County Ladies team player Emily, first represented Cornwall at junior level as a 13 year old back in 2016 and he has partnered Stephens on many occasions since. The pair were originally both members at Truro where they were well schooled by Junior Organiser Gary Andrew before switching clubs to Trevose more recently. Wilson who has played 31 junior matches for the Duchy now plays off a 1 handicap. Stephens, off 2, first played for Cornwall U14s as a 12 year old in 2015 and has a total of 33 junior appearances. Most recently Stephens has been selected to join the England Golf Regional Squad training programme which within it incorporates a Diploma in Sporting Excellence (DiSE) and covers a two year period. Well done Liam and Thomas!

Amusingly the County Mens Team now contains two unrelated Wilsons and similarly two Stephens. Conor Wilson (Perranporth) and Aaron Stephens (Newquay) are both in the side to face Wiltshire and are joined by Rob MacGregor (Tehidy Park), Steve Davies (Trevose), George Champion (Truro), Joe Reynard (Trevose) and Tom Fox (China Fleet). In a late change Junior County Captain Cameron Gurd (Perranporth) makes a further appearance replacing the injured Kieran Faulkner (Looe).

For Cornwall the match brings the chance to restore some pride in an indifferent season which has seen just two wins from the 5 matches played to date and the team currently sitting in 5th spot in the 7 county league. Veale says "I have asked the team to give me just one more performance before I hand over the baton to my Vice-Captain Charlie Phillips. It would be a great way to sign off in style with a win in Wiltshire." Veale will undoubtedly keep up his excellent and customary on course Twitter reporting. You can follow him via @IanjVeale.

Good Luck Team Cornwall!
