CGU Round Up September 2019

Well there has been a lot going on this month and in the hope I don’t forget anyone here is a bit of a round up of what has gone on.

England Golf Champion of Champions - Charlie Phillips (Newquay) and George Law (Perranporth) travelled to Frilford Heath in mid September to represent Cornwall as Boys and Seniors County Champions respectively. Unfortunately neither would say they performed well in the finals against their counterparts from a host of English Counties, despite enjoying the experience

George finished tied 22nd in the 31 man field after rounds of 77 and 81. Devon’s Matt Millar charged through the field in round two with a 66 to finish on 140, one shot behind the winner, Surrey’s Ben Partridge. Charlie returned scores of 81 and 80 to finish tied 19th in a 28 man field where the winner was Steve Graham (East Sussex) on 142.

The Mullion team (L to R; Alex McHugh, Mark Twynham (Team Captain), Chats Harris and Jamie Greet

England Golf Champion Club - Mullion were Cornwall’s representatives in this event staged at Romford GC, Essex. Whilst the team enjoyed the trip and the honour of representing the county, it was to be a torrid two days for the three team members. The club finished 30th from the 31 counties involved on a total of 468, some 47 shots behind winners Northumberland (City of Newcastle GC). For Mullion Jamie Greet finished 54th with rounds of 74 and 76, whilst Alex McHugh shot 77 and 81. Chats Harris opened with an 85 but restored some pride with a day two 75.

George Leigh has played his first tournament for the University of Nevada and Las Vegas. Opening with the William H Tucker in Albequerque, Leigh shot rounds of 73, 77 and 79 to finish tied 62nd in a 90 man field. Leigh’s UNLV team finished in tied 10th spot amongst the 16 university teams playing.

Leigh has been named in the England Boys’ Squad for the 2019-2020 season. Leigh finished 11th in the 2019 Fairhaven Trophy, played his part in the Boys Home International triumph and also competed in the Carris Trophy and Boys’ Amateur Championship. Congratulations to George on this selection. Leigh is joined in the team by Devon’s Craig Passmore along with Jack Bigham, Max Hopkins (both Hertfordshire), Oscar Doran, Remy Miller (both Cheshire), the Walker Cup’s Conor Gough (BB&O) and Josh Hill (Dubai).

Emily Toy (Carlyon Bay) has continued her stellar year by being named as one of four English players in Great Britain and Ireland’s initial squad for next year’s Curtis Cup at Conwy in Wales. The 41st match will be played in June 2020 and GB & I will be bidding to regain the trophy after last year losing  17-3 defeat to the US. The highlight for Emily this year was producing the best performance of her career to win the 116th Women’s Amateur Championship at Royal County Down. As a result Toy gained entries into this year's Women’s British Open at Woburn, the Evian Championship In France and will participate in next year’s US Women’s Open and the Augusta National Women’s Amateur Championship. In addition Emily is a fixed member of the England Women's team representing her country both at home and abroad.

On Saturday 21st September the CG staged a very successful fund raising Am-Am style event at Tehidy Park. A separate report on this will appear shortly.

The Depot & Petherick Cups competition was staged at Trethorne on 22nd September and unfortunately had to be abandoned after torrential downpours flooded the greens with just about half of the field still to complete. This was a pity for a number of reasons as the course was in great condition and there had already been a number of excellent scores. Most disappointed will have been Charlie Scorse (Falmouth) who off his 5 handicap had returned a gross 72 to lead the Depot Cup proceedings for Club scratch champions. last year's winner Ewan Warren (St Austell) also returned a gross 72 but would have lost out on countback. Third best score at the time of abandoning came from Max Stockwell (Bowood Park) with a gross 73.

Whilst Harry Hall may have stolen some headlines this week, the Duchy's other tour Professional Rhys Enoch (Truro) was in action in the Challenge Tour's Hopps Open de Provence where he finished in a tie for 38th spot. Enoch is listed in the entries for this week's Challenge Tour event the Lalla Aicha at Royal Dar es Salaam and will be hoping for a good week. He sits ranked 20th on the Tour from which the top 15 players will earn a European Tour card for 2020. We all wish him well.
