Simon Hobbs Junior County Champion 2017

Simon Hobbs (Bowood Park and pictured above with CGU Juniors President Alan Lund) became the CGU Junior County Champion yesterday at West Cornwall GC after returning a pair of 75s (+12) to claim the title in this his last year as an eligible junior. Hobbs who has represented the county at both junior and mens level was pushed all the way by runner up Joe Reynard (Trevose) who fell just the one shot short on a total of 151 (76 + 75). Host club member and county junior captain Bradley Barnes was third on 152 (76 + 76).

A total of 42 juniors set out in the 36 hole competition on a day which was not only very warm but also almost windless and organisers were concerned from the outset that the heat might take it's toll on some and this proved to be the case. In another joint event the Cornwall Ladies County Golf Association staged their Junior County Championship with 18 girls participating on the same course.

After Round 1 the leader was Cameron Gurd (Truro) as the recently crowned county U14 Champion put together the best round of the day, a 73 to lead by two from Hobbs. On a beautifully presented West Cornwall course with fast greens Gurd made 9 pars and 3 birdies with just one double bogey.

However Gurd could not maintain his good scoring in the afternoon round as he slipped to a 10 over 79. Hobbs first round saw him also make 3 birdies mixed with an equal number of pars and bogeys. The same applied to his afternoon round but on the day he was the player who dealt with the conditions both above and on the ground the best. A popular winner Hobbs was delighted.

'It's obviously great to win this in my last year as a junior. To be honest I wasn't that happy with the way I played but to come out on top despite that is nice.'

In the U18 nett competition the winner was St Austell's Ollie Watson (above) with a nett total of 138 (70 + 68).Second was Ben Lamb (Tehidy Park) on 139 (71 + 68) and third  was Gurd on 140 (67 + 73).

On a day with both U18 and U16 categories Joe Reynard (above) became U16 champion after the rounds outlined above. U16 runner up was Gurd with George Law (Peranporth) third. Despite a morning 81 Law returned the second best gross score of the day with an afternoon 74.

In the U16 nett the winner was Will Price (Perranporth) (above) who scored an excellent 9 under par nett total of 129 (66 + 63) to claim the prize 9 shots ahead of his nearest competitor Watson on 138. Third was Lamb on 139.
