Channel League against Wiltshire

North Wilts G. C. on Sunday 7th May 2006.

Cornwall Extend Unbeaten Run!

Cornwall played their second Channel League game away to Wiltshire on Sunday.

On a North Wilts course that’s greens were suffering from a lack of growth so far this year putting proved difficult for both teams.

Cornwall seemed to have adapted better to the conditions and took a 2-0 lead in the morning foursomes with convincing wins by Ackland & Jasper 3/2 and Piner & Booker 4/3. But as in their previous league game just when it looked as if Cornwall were set to take a healthy lead , Wiltshire grounded out two unlikely wins to go into lunch 3-2 up and leaving Cornwall with it all to do.

Cornwall needed to win 6 of the 10 afternoon singles matches and when Greenaway and Ackland playing one and two went down to some quality golf from their Wiltshire opponents the match seemed to be slipping away. But there’s a good spirit about the Cornwall team and never once did they give it up. The fight back began with wins from Macgregor, Booker, Floyd and Jasper and with 2 matches left on the course Cornwall needed to win both to secure victory.

John Piner was unluckily denied a win on the last and halved leaving Richard Simmons to coolly close out his match on the final green to secure his point and the half match. Cornwall deserved to get something out of the match and were unlucky in the end not to come away with the win.
