Cornwall v Devon Pre-Season Friendly Wednesday 15th February 2017 St Enodoc GC
The Cornwall Juniors - pictured above - took on neighbours Devon yesterday at a sunkissed St Enodoc in the annual pre-season friendly which sees a 12 man team play a scratch stableford with the ten best scores from each side forming an aggregate total. After managing an excellent draw away to Devon at Saunton last year hopes were high the Cornish boys would achieve an outright win over their home turf.
This was not to be however as Devon claimed the win by 251 points to the Duchy's 238.
The St Enodoc course was presented in excellent condition with its customary fast greens, and with the weather a complete contrast to that experienced by the Juniors at Perranporth on Monday, there was a gentle breeze which ensured there was still a tough test of golf - something the scores from both sides demonstrated.John Barnes picture below gives an indication of how nice the day was.

29 scratch points was the best score of the day with three Cornish juniors and two from Devon on that mark. The reliable Junior Captain Bradley Barnes (West Cornwall) and George Leigh (Trevose) were two of the Cornishmen on 29 and the third was Mullion's Freddie Norris in what was arguably the best performance of the day. Freddie's 29 points equated to 36 nett points as he returned the lowest gross of the day, a 74 which included 4 birdies.
On a day when the CSS went up to 75, Devons tail was the one which wagged the hardest. With the first 6 scores in the Duchy held a 13 point lead but as other scores were returned this was reversed to the final 13 point loss.
The other top Cornish performer was Jack Andrew (Truro). Playing off 7 Andrew returned Cornwall's 4th best score with 24 gross points. This was his first competitive round after a five month absence and he defied his long lay off period.
