All Penwith Battle for Wills Salver

Monday 13th February 2017

Two Penwith peninsula based clubs will contest the Frank Wills Salver Final on St Piran's Day, Sunday 5th March after both Cape Cornwall and West Cornwall came thought their respective semi finals yesterday.

At Newquay, West Cornwall overcame a determined challenge from Whitsand Bay winning 3- 2 whilst just along the coast at Perranporth, neighbours Cape Cornwall had it just a little easier as they saw off plucky Treloy by a 4-1 margin.

West Cornwall did not have it all their own way against Whitsand Bay. The top Lelant based pairing of Mark & Ross Hutchings emphatically defeated David Fairbrother & Zack Rosen 5&4 to set the team on their way. Whitsand's 4th pair, Mike Richards & James Sampson restored parity with a 5&4 win of their own against Rod Jenkin & Tom Ruhrmund before West Cornwall again got their noses in front as the last pairing of Jon Musitano & Kevin Nankervis beat Gavin Brannan & Adam Bushrod 4&3. Matches 2 and 3 were the deciding ones. They came to a tense conclusion at much the same time with the Bay's Gary & Tom Smith beating Mike Masters & Richard Bunch by the odd hole before West Cornwall claimed the final berth as Lee Bushby and Perran Griffin won 2&1 against Gary Dyer & Geoff Naylor.

West Cornwall are three time winners of the Salver their last victory coming in 1996.

Meanwhile Cape Cornwall have never before tasted success in the overall competition. Their encounter with Treloy saw them reach the final with wins in matches 2 to 4. Brian Polglase & Chris Lewis beat Carl Langslow and Mike Marshall 4&3, Terry Dodd & Martin Uren beat C Bailey and David George 5&4, and Paul Ferris & George Firmager beat David Rid & James Morpurgo 7&5. The first match between Cape's Steve Wicks & Mark Prisk and Treloy's Jimmy Paul & Rick Hamilton was halved as was the final match between Dean Goddard & Chris Perks and Mike Martin & Tony Partridge.

The final will take place over 36 holes on Sunday 5th March 2017 at Perranporth GC.
