President David Inch hosts the 2015 CGU Dinner

Tuesday 24th November 2015

Cornwall Golf Union President David Inch played host as the 2015 CGU Dinner took place at the Best Western Hotel Bristol, Newquay on Friday 20th November and the venue yet again provided a warm welcome to the excellent 142 attendance.

Whilst the hotel took a battering from both wind and rain during the dinner, there had been a weather window earlier in the day which permitted some 20 plus hardy golfers to take advantage of Newquay GC's generous hospitality in a roll up stableford competition.

The top three scores on the day were rewarded with prizes at the dinner. First place went to Bowood Park's Nigel Connolly as he returned an excellent 35 points. Second place went to his clubmate Max Stockwell on 32, a score matched by Frank Blake (St Mellion) who lost out on countback.

Guests of the CGU included  Past England Golf President, Pam Benka as well as SWCGA President, Paul Clahane and County Presidents from adjoining Devon, Somerset, Dorset, Glamorgan and Gloucestershire as well as Anthony Scrivener of Ocean BMW. All were served a four course meal and coffee with the hotel's customary supreme efficiency before a number of toasts were proposed. CGU Vice President Glyn Rowett proposed the loyal toast before outgoing County Captain Richard Simmons addressed the dinner.

Simmons looked back over his two year term and referred to the 2014 English County Final winning performance as the undoubted highlight. He proposed a toast to England Golf.

In response Pam Benka stated how pleased she was to be able to come to Cornwall as the Union's guest. During the course of a lighthearted speech she congratulated the county on its 2014 achievement as well as both Newquay and St Enodoc Golf Clubs on celebrating their 125th anniversaries this year. She also paid tribute to long standing county stalwart and former CGU President Gerry Fitter MBE.

Benka proposed the toast to the Cornwall Golf Union after which President David Inch spoke. He was delighted to see so many present and introduced his guests to the audience saying how much he valued the friendships he had made with them during his term of office. He also paid tribute to the efforts of County Captain Simmons before proposing a toast to the honoured guests. He then went on to make a number of presentations.

Clowance GC Captain Adam Coleman was presented with the Summer Handicap League Trophy after the club topped the table in the 2015 competition and almost his entire team were present to receive it and individual prizes. Budock Vean GC received runners up prizes.

The CGU Young Player of the Year award was won by West Cornwall GC junior Bradley Barnes after his excellent season.

Top honour of the night went to the CGU Player of the Year which was won by Perranporth GC's current Amateur County Champion and long standing county team member Conor Wilson. Wilson is pictured above receiving his award from CGU President David Inch.

The evening was rounded off in excellent fashion by comedian Adger Brown.

The date of the 2016 dinner will be Friday 18th November.
