Channel League outcome Sunday 5th October 2014
The Cornwall Golf Union County Men’s team capped an outstanding season without hitting a further ball yesterday as the only outstanding Channel League match took place. A favourable outcome saw the Duchy crowned as Channel League Champions for 2014.
With Cornwall leading the league, and having completed their matches last month, the final game took place yesterday as Glamorgan faced Gloucestershire at Southerndown GC, Bridgend. With Glamorgan needing to win 12.5 points from a possible 15 to overhaul the Duchy, they very nearly pulled it off as in a valiant effort to snatch the title they defeated their English opponents by a 12 -3 margin. Having been two up with two holes to play in the last match Glamorgan lost both holes and therein lost their chance of the title.
This left the two counties tied on match and game points and when this occurs the winner is decided on the basis of the result between the two counties involved. Well Cornwall beat Glamorgan 11.5 - 3.5 at Tehidy Park GC in early July and in turn it means Cornwall retain the Channel League title they won in 2013.
Wining the Channel League is icing on the cake for the Cornish team and adds to their recent first time ever English County Championship win at Royal North Devon last weekend and the South Western Counties Golf Association Amateur Championship in June. The team under the captaincy of County Captain Richard Simmons also finished as runners up in the SWCGA Inter County Team Matchplay Championship.
The County’s success this year will be officially recognised at the CGU Annual Dinner which takes place at The Hotel Bristol, Newquay on Friday 21st November 2014, when representatives of England Golf and the participating Channel League counties will join with golfers from across the county to celebrate what has been an exceptional season.
