Cornwall team for English County Finals Royal North Devon GC Westward Ho! 26-28th September 2014

This week sees the staging of the England Golf Mens County Championships at Royal North Devon GC, Westward Ho! with South West Regional winners Cornwall taking on Surrey, Warwickshire and Yorkshire over three days of foursomes and singles matchplay.

Cornwall Golf Union County Captain Richard Simmons has named a strong 7 man team for the finals, which the Duchy reached after winning the SW qualifier in June and on the same RND course.

The team is: Tom Fox (China Fleet), Joe Cruse (St Enodoc), Rob MacGregor (Tehidy Park), Matt Richards and Harry Hall (West Cornwall), Conor Wilson (Perranporth) and Josh Greenaway (Bowood Park).

Cornwall go into the finals with confidence after a good season of Channel League golf and on the back of a recent good 12-3 win away to Devon which sees the county odds on favourites to retain the Channel league title.

The County Finals are played on a “Round Robin” basis over 3 days, with each day’s play consisiting of 2 matches of 3 games of 18 hole foursomes in the morning and 6 games of 18 hole singles in the afternoon.

The order of play for Day 1 was drawn by the President of England Golf, Ray Saunders (Kent) and sees Cornwall face Yorkshire at 0800 on Friday morning in Match 1, whilst Warwickshire will play Surrey in Match 2. On day two (Saturday 27th Sept) the 1st Match of the day will see Match 1 winners from day 1 v Match 2 losers from day 1 and the 2nd match will see Match 2 winners from day 1 v Match 1 losers from day 1. On the final day (Sunday 28th Sept) the round robin will be completed.

Cornwall have never won the event and in fact have only qualified for the finals once before in 1997 when it was staged at Ferndown, whereas all of the other counties participating have experienced becoming winners. The Duchy's first opponents Yorkshire have won the county finals on a record breaking 20 previous occasions and will provide a stern test on day one. As Captain Simmons indicates 'What a fantastic opportunity for us. What an incentive. We are playing a course that all the players know really well - it's almost like playing at home.'

CGU President, David Inch is looking forward to the event saying 'I am very proud indeed to be the President of the Union and to be accompanying the team as we seek to put the county firmly on the map where first class amateur golf is concerned. The team has done very well again this year and I am confident they will show us in good stead up against some strong and very experienced opposition. We have received good wishes from the other South West Counties and we aim to do them proud'.

In his team Fox is well known for playing quality golf and was the winner of the individual competition at South West week. Cruse arguably has the best individual matchplay record for the county and individually or as a pair are capable of beating anyone. England Boys international Harry Hall has had a good season and was part of the winning English team in the boys Home Internationals as well as capturing the Wesh Youths Open Championship. In South West Week he formed a great partnership with another doyen of Cornish golf in Rob MacGregor, fresh from an excellent individual performance representing Tehidy Park in last weekend's English Champion Club event. The genial giant and Hall were unbeaten in their foursomes matches. MacGregor's return to competitive golf over the past 18 months has been a real bonus for the Duchy and he is once again established as a fixture in the team.

In Richards, the reigning County Amateur Champion, there is more talent and he is likely to partner in form Conor Wilson fresh from this weekend's Depot Cup win to add to the Cornish Closed title he collected in May.

Completing the side is Bowood Park's Golf manager and 'veteran' county team member Josh Greenaway. His golfing pedigree has never been in doubt through many years of successful county representation.

The action gets underway at Royal North Devon GC at 8.00am this coming Friday and whilst all golfers in the county will be aware there is a clash with an event taking place in Scotland this week any support will be greatly appreciated.
