Treloy’s Rick Hamilton was a winner yesterday on a beautiful sunny day as the Cornwall Golf Union staged the Depot & Petherick Cups competitions at St Austell. The event plays host to club scratch and handicap champions from affiliated clubs across the county.

Hamilton playing off 6 returned a gross 75 to win the Petherick Cup for the best nett score of the day. Having dropped 6 shots in his opening 4 holes he played the remainder of his round in 1 under gross to claim victory.

Main honours for the day went to Perranporth’s County Team member Conor Wilson who shot an excellent gross 67 to claim the Depot Cup. Wilson’s outward 9 holes were eventful with three bogies and the one birdie for a 2 over front 9 of 37. However the back 9 ignited with 5 birdies as he came home in just the 30 shots for the 67 total.

Wilson will be part of the Cornwall County team playing in the English County Finals this coming week (26th-28th September) at Royal North Devon GC, Westward Ho where the Duchy take on Surrey, Warwickshire and Yorkshire.

Paul Suddes (Truro) shot a 70 in a creditable defence of the Depot title he won last year to finish 3rd whist Mullion’s Tom Julier just pipped Suddes to the gross runner’s up spot on countback.

Wilson and Julier finished in 2mnd and 3rd place respectively in the Petherick Cup handicap competition.

St Austell GC Captain Gary Hooper welcomed those participating and presented the prizes together with Cornwall Golf Union President David Inch who thanked St Austell for their hospitality and the excellent condition their course was presented in.
