Fullers London Pride Gold Medal Woodhall Spa, Lincs 16/17th August 2014

Cornwall’s Tom Julier (Mullion) and Kevin Wooley (Trethorne) took part over the weekend in the England Golf Fuller’s London Pride Gold Medal Final at Woodhall Spa, Lincs. The two day stableford event comprised 78 players from around the country playing over the renowned Hotchkin Course at the home of England Golf. Making it to the Fuller's London Pride Gold Medal Final is the ultimate prize for club handicap golfers with the chance to play two rounds on one of the UK's finest golf courses with expenses including accommodation and meals included.

Conditions were however tough with strong winds on day one. Gusting at over 20 mph, it severely tested the handicap golfers, a fact reflected in the scoring. If the first round was difficult, the second proved even worse as the wind gathered in strength and proved hard to handle.

At the completion of Saturday’s first round Julier - used to playing in the wind at the country’s most southerly course -  found himself in outright second spot after recording an excellent 34 points and just the two points behind first round leader Thomas Brown (Casterton GC). Julier’s first round started well with 5 straight pars and with a couple of birdies on the back 9 he was in good shape coming to the last hole, where unfortunately he did not score.

Meanwhile Wooley returned a creditable score of 31 points to remain very much in contention.

Day 2 however saw both players struggle as Julier and Wooley scored 25 and 26 points respectively. After again starting well four no score holes for Julier put paid to his chances as he finished with a total of 59 points and in tied 8th place. Wooley also started round 2 well and at the halfway stage was still very much in with a shout. However, his back 9 let him down, scoring just 9 points to finish tied 13th with a total of 57. The winner was Bristol Players Club’s Martin Neal who followed his first round 27 points with an excellent 39 for a total of 66.

The Cornwall qualifier for the Fullers London Pride Gold Medal 2015 takes place at St Austell GC on Sunday 21st September 2014
