SW4C Round up

SW4C West Cornwall GC
The South West Four Counties event was concluded yesterday on another fine dry day at West Cornwall.
Following the prolonged strokeplay excitement of Tuesday matchplay became the focus of attention.
On Wednesday afternoon the first of the round robin games took place with Cornwall facing Devon. The result went the way of Devon by just a 4-3 margin. Wins for the Duchy boys came from the irrepressible host club member Harry Hall (4&3), Mullion's Josh Chaplin (5&3) and Truro's Jake Finn (3&2). Defeats for Niall Hutton (St Mellion) Connor Jenkins (Bude) Ben Browning (Falmouth) and the young foursomes pairing of Zak Omlo (St Austell) and Alex McHugh (Mullion) made for a slightly disappointing finish to an otherwise successful day.
On Thursday morning Somerset were Cornwall's opponents and first out were the two strokeplay marathon runners Hall and Sloman. Hall registered a double with a 1up win. Alex McHugh also won again as did the foursomes pairing of Omlo this time playing with Browning. Yet again Cornwall could not quite get over the line as defeats for Hutton, Jenkins, Chaplin and Finn condemned the team to another 4-3 defeat.
In the final matchplay Cornwall faced Dorset with both counties vying to avoid bottom place in the table. Hutton and Jenkins were moved to the foursomes and delivered a 7&6 victory and when Hall won 4&2 hopes were high. However the majority of the team could not match these exploits as defeats followed for Chaplin, Finn, Omlo and Browning. Alex McHugh kept his good form intact with another singles win. The end result was a rather familiar 4-3 loss. This consigned Cornwall to the bottom of the matchplay shield placings. Devon were the winners of the shield as they remained undefeated with their other wins coming against Dorset (5-2) and Somerset (also 5-2). Somerset were runners up with their other win coming over Dorset.
The presentation ceremony at least left the Cornish team feeling better as they collected the Strokeplay shield and as Harry Hall was presented with the Individual strokeplay cup. (Harry Hall pictured above receiving the Strokeplay Winners Trophy from Cornwall Golf Union President David Inch)
All players and officials were warmly welcomed by West Cornwall GC President Ken Evans and Club Captain Antony Richards with both CGU President David Inch and Juniors President Phil Linaker responding. Linaker was glowing in his praise of the hospitality extended by the club, its caterers and the condition of the course which was a huge credit to Keith Kemp and his team.Everyone joined in wishing Keith well as he tackles the London Marathon on behalf of the Royal British Legion Charity.
